How cosmetic bonding repairs a chipped front tooth, a small gap or a worn edge, usually in one visit.
A corner of a front tooth snaps off on a fork. The small gap between your two front teeth has been there since school. An old filling near the front has turned a yellow-gray you notice every time you smile. Cosmetic bonding at our Lakeview studio in Chicago fixes this kind of thing, usually in a single visit.
Bonding is tooth-colored resin, shaped by hand onto the tooth and hardened with a blue light. Because it adds material instead of covering the tooth, very little of your own tooth is removed, and often none.
We start by asking what you'd like to change. For a chip or a small gap, bonding is often the smallest step that gets you there.
“I start by asking what they're hoping to change, because sometimes it's much smaller than veneers.”
Bonding suits small, visible changes on front teeth. A chipped or cracked edge, a small gap, edges worn down by grinding, or a tooth that's shorter or a different shape than its neighbors can all be rebuilt with it. It can also cover a stain that whitening won't lift.
It's also how a dark old filling on a front tooth is replaced. The new one is matched to the shade of your teeth, so it blends in when you talk and smile. You'll sometimes hear this called a cosmetic filling.

First the shade is chosen to match your teeth. The front of the tooth is lightly roughened so the resin can grip, then the resin goes on in thin layers. Each layer is shaped by hand and hardened with the light. At the end the tooth is trimmed, polished and your bite is checked.
A small repair is usually done in one visit, often in under an hour. Many bonding repairs need no numbing, because little or nothing is drilled away.
With most repairs, you lie back, the work gets done, and you take the result on trust. We'd rather you see it. We photograph the tooth before we start and again when we're done, and show you both. You see exactly what changed, and if the shape isn't what you pictured, you can say so before you leave.
A chipped front tooth doesn't always need a veneer. For a small repair, bonding removes little or nothing from the tooth, costs less, and can be redone later. Porcelain veneers suit bigger changes in color and shape, and they resist stain for longer. They usually need some enamel removed, so they're a bigger commitment.
We'll talk through both with you. Before either, we check your bite and ask about grinding. A heavy bite can chip bonding and porcelain alike, so we plan around it and the repair lasts.
“A mouth is always attached to a whole person and the whole mouth always matters.”
People sometimes call bonding a temporary fix. It isn't. With good care it often lasts several years, sometimes much longer. It is softer than enamel and porcelain, though, so over time it can pick up stain or chip at the edge. A chip can usually be repaired without redoing the whole thing.
Don't bite your nails, pens or ice. Go easy on coffee, tea and red wine for the first couple of days, and rinse with water after them. If you grind or clench, a night guard protects the bonding while you sleep. At your regular cleanings, the bonding can be polished to bring back its shine.

Usually not. Little or nothing is removed from the tooth, so many repairs need no numbing. If a tooth needs shaping or decay removed first, it's numbed.
Usually one visit. A small repair on one tooth often takes under an hour.
For small repairs, bonding usually is. It's quicker, costs less and changes the tooth less, but it stains and chips sooner. Porcelain veneers last longer and keep their color.
No. Resin keeps its color. If you'd like whiter teeth, whiten first and have the bonding matched to your new shade.
Often, yes, when the gap is small. A larger gap may look better closed with Invisalign first, or with veneers.
Usually not when it's for appearance. Bonding that repairs a chip or replaces a filling may qualify. Our team can check your benefits first.
